After winning multiple graded stakes on Fountain of Youth Day, journeymen rider Tyler Gaffalione was voted Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for February 24th -March 1st. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. The 25-year-old Floridian led all North American riders in total stakes earnings for the week after capturing the $200,000 Davona Dale (G2), the $200,000 Mac Diarmida (G2), second in the $150,000 Herecomesthebride Stakes (G3), and third place finishes in the $150,000 The Very One Stakes (G3) and $300,000 Gulstream Park Mile (G2).
With riding assignments in 8 of the 10 stakes on a quality filled race program at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, offering $1.95 million in purses, Gaffalione started his stakes run by finishing third aboard long shot La Signare for trainer Brandan Walsh in the The Very One Stakes. Returning in the Herecomesthebride Stakes with a second place finish on the former G1 winner, Abscond for trainer Eddie Kenneally.
Piloting the undefeated three year old filly, Tonalist’s Shape ($6.20) in the Davona Dale Stakes, the rider nursed her along on the lead to win by a length and a quarter, making it five in a row for the promising chestnut Tonalist offspring, conditioned by Saffie Joseph, Jr. Continuing on with two more stakes engagements on the program, Gaffalione finished third in the Gulfstream Park Mile Stakes aboard the Vickie Foley trained, Hog Creek Hustle. In the Mac Diarmida Stakes, the confident and gifted reinsmen allowed the Pegasus Turf winner, Zulu Alpha ($4.00) to settle early while coming off the pace, commencing a five wide move and outdueling a rival to edge clear late, winning by a length for the meets leading conditioner Michael Maker.
Gaffalione was forced to sit out the premier race on the card, The Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) as the two-time Florida Sire Stakes winner and potential Kentucky Derby bound prospect, Chance It was withdrawn the morning of because of an unfavorable post position.
As the leading rider by total stakes earnings for the week, Gaffalione was also the leading rider in total earnings, picking up $464,730. Maintaining a 15% win rate and finishing in the money on 50% of his 40 mounts.
He’s won 40 of 274 starts this year and 1,225 of 7,351 career mounts. In 2020, his mounts have earned $2,566,292 and his lifetime earnings exceed $54 million.
