With a win in the United Nations (G1) aboard the longest shot in the field, Antonio Gallardo earned his first Grade 1 victory and was named Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Week for June 25 – July 1, 2018. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Antoino Gallardo won the first career Grade 1 event of his career on Saturday at Monmouth Park with an upset win in the $315,000 United Nations. The United Nations was one of just two Grade 1 stakes held last week.

Gallardo’s mount, Funtastic, was the longest shot on the board at post time and paid $48.00 to win. The pair gained an early lead and led wire to wire, defeating a field of eight that included multiple graded stakes winners Money Multiplier and Oscar Nominated.

Prior to the United Nations win, Gallardo was fourth in the $100,000 Philip H. Iselin Stakes (G3) with Imperative and fourth in the $78,000 Lady’s Secret Stakes with Forever Liesl on the same card.

Gallardo picked up his first graded stakes wins in 2016, winning the Nashua (G2), Long Island Handicap (G3), Violet (G3) and the Jersey Shore (G3). He won the Salvator Mile (G3) in 2017; the United Nations win was his first graded stakes victory of 2018.

Gallardo was the third leading jockey by number of wins last week. He won nine of 30 starts for a win rate of 30%. With four second-place finishes and three third-place finishes, he was in the money in 53% of his mounts for the week.

Last week, Gallardo was the fourth leading North American jockey by both stakes earnings, with $189,000, and by total earnings, with $332,819. In his career, he has won 1,436 of his 7,337 starts, and has earned over $29 million. In 2018, he has notched 150 wins and earned over $2.7 million.

Gallardo is the second-leading rider of the current Presque Isle meet; he won the riding title in 2016, with 148 wins and 46 more than the next leading rider.
