Gulfstream Park Press Release
Miracle’s International Trading Inc.’s 6-year-old gelding Areyoutalkingtome came flying down the center of the track to catch the leaders and spring a 26-1 upset of Sunday’s eighth race, giving apprentice jockey Mario Fuentes his first career win.
Fuentes is a 21-year-old native of Chile who rides with a 10-pound weight allowance. His milestone victory came with his eighth career mount, all at Gulfstream. He was greeted by a large contingent of family and friends in the winner’s circle.
“It feels great. I just can’t believe I crossed the finish line,” Fuentes said. “I just rode the race, that’s all I can say.”
Areyoutalkingtome ($55.40) is trained by Matthew Williams. The chestnut gelding ran 6 ½ furlongs in 1:18.52 to win the $20,000 claiming event by a half-length.
Fuentes made his professional debut Feb. 7, running seventh with He’s Smokin Hot. He had finished second twice before his breakthrough win, most recently with Salsa Rita Feb. 20. His father, Mauricio Fuentes, is a trainer based at Gulfstream Park West who earned his first career victory with Dad’s Yankees Sept. 26, 2019.
“I’ve been riding for two years from galloping to breezing and coming out of gate, but I’ve been in the horse business my whole life with my father,” Fuentes said. “Everybody at Gulfstream Park West helped me out. Everybody.”
Fuentes does some freelance riding in the mornings while also galloping horses for trainer Tamara Levy.
“The majority of the horses are hers,” Fuentes said. “It just came up to me and when I got on the first horse, I liked it. I loved it, actually. I don’t look at it as a job; it’s more of a passion.”
