After earning his first career riding title, apprentice jockey Julio Correa was voted Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for August 12-18, 2019. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by FoundationDetox.com, America’s #1 Equine Toxin Remover.
Julio Correa won his first career riding title on Sunday, surpassing Trevor McCarthy to lead the summer meet at Laurel Park. The apprentice rider won 35 races, five more than McCarthy, who has won three consecutive riding titles at Laurel over the last 12 months.
Correa capped his meet with four wins on the closing day card. The four wins represented three different trainers and only one of the victories was aboard a horse that was the post-time favorite.
In addition to his Laurel mounts, Correa spent Saturday riding at Colonial Downs, including a win in an optional claiming event and a fourth-place finish on Old Time Revival in the Chesapeake Stakes.
Correa cracked the top 25 jockeys by total earnings last week with $187,899. He began riding professionally late in 2018 and has amassed $2,229,953 in career earnings.
He won seven of his 25 starts and finished in the money on nearly half of his mounts. To date, he has made 520 starts, resulting in 87 wins, 68 seconds and 58 thirds.
The 25-year-old apprentice rode in his first career race last November at Parx. He hails from Puerto Rico and attended the same riding school that produced Jose Ortiz, Irad Ortiz, Jr, and John Velazquez; voters also expressed support for Velazquez and his cross-country stakes wins at Saratoga and Del Mar last week.
