Jockey Florent Geroux returned to Kentucky Downs and picked up right where he left off in 2014 as he scored two stakes wins on Saturday and Sunday to earn the Shuffle Bean Coffee Jockey of the Week award for September 6 – September 11. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America.
In 2015, Geroux took Kentucky Downs by storm winning at an astounding rate of 43%. After starting off this year with no wins on opening day, Geroux won three on Thursday, three on Saturday, and finished the week off with five wins on Sunday.
Two of Geroux’s wins on Saturday came in back to back stakes races. The first of which came aboard Da Big Hoss in the grade 3 Calumet Farm Kentucky Turf Cup. It was Geroux’s fourth win in a row in as many starts aboard the Mike Maker trainee. The next stakes win came aboard the Mark Casse trained Mississippi Delta in the Kentucky Downs Ladies Sprint.
The Frenchman started off strong on Sunday by winning three out of the first six races on the card. Geroux rode that momentum into the Dueling Grounds Oaks and Dueling Grounds Derby winning both by a combined 13 3/4 lengths.
In the Dueling Grounds Oaks, Geroux teamed up with Mike Maker once again aboard Try Your Luck. The pair stalked the pace to seize the lead in the stretch, drawing away to win by an impressive 7 1/2 lengths. Maker and Geroux would team up again in the Dueling Grounds Derby with 2016 Derby runner Oscar Nominated. After bobbling at the start, Geroux allowed Oscar Nominated to settle off the pace and once again took the lead in the stretch. Under urging from Geroux, Oscar Nominated drew off to win by 6 1/4 lengths to sweep the Dueling Grounds Oaks/Derby double.
Geroux led North America in wins with 11 and added five seconds, and 2 third place finishes for earnings of $1,463,225.
