Brian Hernandez, Jr. won his 2,000th career race last week and was voted Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for December 16-22, 2019. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by, America’s #1 Equine Toxin Remover.

Brian Hernandez, Jr. started his week just two wins shy of reaching a new career milestone of 2,000 career victories. At the Fair Grounds on Wednesday, he won his only mount of the day, bringing him to 1,999. On Thursday, he returned to win his only mount that day, reaching the 2,000-win mark in just his first two starts of the week. The notable victory came aboard Afleet Roger ($6.40) in a maiden claiming event for trainer James Baker. The pair cleared the field by over nine lengths.

Hernandez won three races and finished in the money on half of his 12 starts last week. After his milestone win, he is 2,001 for 14,700 lifetime and has 117 wins in 999 starts to date in 2019.

Hernandez landed in the top 20 jockeys by earnings last week and was the eighth leading rider by stakes earnings, picking up $51,000 after a win in the Buddy Diliberto Memorial Stakes with Captivating Moon ($4.20) and a fourth-place finish aboard English Soul in the Blushing K.D. Stakes. He earned $108,570 in overall earnings last week, bringing his 2019 total to $7.9 million and his career total to over $81 million.

Like many in the field, Hernandez started his race riding career in his home state of Louisiana, a fitting place for him to earn his 2,000th win. He was honored with the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey in 2004 and has made four Breeders’ Cup appearances, including a win in the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Classic with Fort Larned. Last year, he was ranked 17th overall by earnings.
