After winning the Athenia Stakes and leading the North American Jockey colony by earnings for the week, Javier Castellano was named Shuffle Bean Coffee Jockey of the Week for October 17 – 23, 2016. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America.
Castellano was aboard Irish-bred Roca Rojo for the first time in the Grade 3, $200,000 Athenia Stakes at Belmont Park on Sunday, October 23rd, and settled the Chad Brown trainee into a ground-saving run in the filly and mare event over a soft turf course. On Belmont’s Empire Showcase Day on Saturday, Castellano rode Quezon to victory in the $150,000 Iroquois Stakes and was second on Tainted Angel in the $250,000 Maid of the Mist Stakes.
Last week, Castellano led the North American jockey colony in total earnings, ranked second in stakes earnings, and finished in the money on 76% of his mounts. He collected 12 wins, 4 seconds, and 6 third place finishes with total earnings of $305,750.
Castellano currently leads North American jockeys by earnings, pushing his total to $22,020,544 in 1,227 starts to date in 2016. He has led the year-end jockey standings by earnings since 2013 and has received the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
