Winning four races during Santa Anita’s Memorial Day card including a Grade 1 victory, Abel Cedillo was voted the Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for May 18th-May 25th. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America.
In establishing himself as a top rider in the elite Southern California riding colony, Abel Cedillo began the Memorial Day Weekend of racing at Santa Anita Park with a winner on Friday and Saturday before adding three consecutive victories on Sunday’s program. To cap off the racing week he added four more on Monday, closing out the Holiday Stakes card with a Grade 1 victory in the $300,000 Gamely Stakes.
In the Monday finale, Cedillo climbed aboard the Buena Vista Stakes winner Keeper Ofthe Stars, breaking with the field and positioned to sit just off the early speed. The journeyman allowed the 4-year-old Midnight Lute filly to stalk and improve position on the far turn while applying pressure on the leaders. Cedillo then set her down for the drive mid-stretch to win by 1 ¼ lengths for conditioner Jonathan Wong.
Abel Cedillo finished the week maintaining a 26% win percentage and was in the money on 56% of his mounts. With nine wins, three seconds, and six thirds, he led the Nation in total earnings with $454,926.
Cedillo has won 49 of 310 starts this year with earnings of $2,905,625. He has won 1,260 of 8,233 lifetime career mounts with earnings exceeding $26 million.
