Luis ContrerasJockey Luis Contreras booted home a pair of stakes winners at Woodbine Racecourse over the weekend and was named the Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Week for November 16th – November 22nd. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America.

Contreras started his weekend stakes winning double at Woodbine on Saturday when taking top honors in the featured race of the day, The Glorious Song Stakes. He piloted favored Ami’s Mesa to an off the pace victory and won by a comfortable length and a half for trainer Josie Carroll.

On Sunday at Woodbine he would cap off a great weekend of riding when he got the call to ride Stacked Decked in the $200,000 Grade 2 Kennedy Road Stakes. Stacked Deck was placed back in his sweet spot on the Woodbine synthetic main track where he is now five of seven lifetime after a disappointing 10th-place finish in the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint.

With Contreras aboard, Stacked Deck tracked dueling leaders Rexton and Paso Doble, and blew by on the outside at the top of the stretch to win the six-furlong sprint in 1:08.34, just a fraction off of the track record for the six-furlong distance.

Luis began his riding career in his native Mexico and moved to the United States to ride, winning his first race at Golden Gate Fields in February of 2007. After moving his tack to Canada in 2009, he enjoyed one of the most successful campaigns of any Woodbine jockey in the 2011 season. Contreras won the riding title with 212 wins which was nine short of Mickey Walls record, set in 1991.

Contreras is currently the second leading rider at Canada’s premiere racing venue. For the week Conteras rode six winners from 29 starters with one second placing and three third place finishes. His total earnings for the week were $257,672.
