Jockey Patrick Husbands pulled off a nifty athletic feat during a maiden claiming race at Woodbine Racetrack this week. Rounding the far turn, the rider’s foot slipped out his left iron, seemingly dashing his chance at victory with so much of the race still left to run.

But as the colt Divine Intrigue remained in contention in deep stretch, Husbands decided he’d rather have no irons than just one. He threw his other leg back to kick out of the right iron, stayed balanced while his feet dangled at the horse’s sides, and got up to win a photo finish by a head.

The chart for Wednesday’s 2nd race at Woodbine read: “DIVINE INTRIGUE settled in midpack, his rider lost his inside iron early turn, chased into stretch, his rider kicked off his right iron in deep stretch, took command then held under a drive.”
