After sweeping the four stakes races at Sam Houston Race Park on Saturday night, Deshawn Parker was voted Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for February 18th – February 23rd. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. The native of Cincinnati, Ohio began his riding career in 1988 and currently leads all jockeys atop the standings at Sam Houston Race Park. Standing at 5′ 11″, the journeymen rider known as a strong finisher had his abilities on full display Texas Preview Day, winning all four premier races with purse earnings totaling $173,700.

The veteran rider’s impressive feat began aboard the eight-year-old mare Texas Belle ($8.40), drawing clear to a four-length victory in the Miss Houston Stakes for trainer Mindy Willis. Parker was victorious in the next race aboard the Bret Calhoun conditioned Dust a Flying ($6.80), positioning him off the pace and rallying to get up just in time in the Two Altazano Stakes. On a roll and in pursuit of three consecutive wins, Parker took command while straightening out for home and setting down the favorite Redatory ($3.80) to draw off and win the Miss Houston Turf Stakes for trainer Allen Dupuy. Cementing an evening to remember, the two time national leader in wins (2010 and 2011) continued his dominance, drawing away late in the Jim’s Orbit Stakes aboard Gold Pilot ($8.60) for trainer Bret Calhoun.

As the leading rider by number of stakes wins for the week, Parker’s mounts earned the most in total stakes earnings in North America. Parker finished the week winning 22% and finishing in the money on 67% of his 18 mounts.

He’s won 35 of 131 starts this year and 5,697 of 34,227 career mounts. In 2020, Parker’s mounts have earned $912,425 and his lifetime earnings to date exceed $70 million.

Well-liked and highly respected by his peers, Parker was honored by the Jockeys’ Guild in 2012 with the Laffit Pincay, Jr Award and also has been a finalist for the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award. In 2016, Parker joined the elite ranks of the winningest jockeys in history, becoming the 32nd jockey to win 5,000 career races.
