Three-time Kentucky Derby winner and 2016 Triple Crown-winning jockey Victor Espinoza has picked up the mount aboard Whitmore in the Kentucky Derby.
Jay Privman of the Daily Racing Form reports that jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., who had ridden the son of Pleasantly Perfect in his last two starts, is committed to ride for trainer Chad Brown, his main client. Brown confirmed that Ortiz Jr. would be aboard My Man Sam in the Derby, while Joel Rosario would ride Shagaf.
“We had a lot of interest in the horse,” Whitmore’s trainer Ron Moquett told the Form.
Moquett said once it became apparent Ortiz would not be available, “we moved forward, and we’ve worked out a deal with Victor Espinoza.”
