Leading North America in stakes earnings last week, Julien Leparoux was voted Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for Jan 13-20. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Journeyman rider Julien Leparoux had nine mounts at the Fair Grounds on Saturday and made the most of his opportunities – with a winning percentage of 30% and 56% in the money.
The Frenchman guided Dontblamerocket ($14.80) to a convincing three length upset in the $125,000 Colonel E.R. Bradley Stakes. Two races later, he returned to the winners circle with another upset victory, this time aboard the promising Mark Casse trainee Enforceable ($15.60), winning the $200,000 Lecomte Stakes (G3) by one and a half lengths.
Leparoux finished the week with five wins from 17 starts and earned $296,000, the fourth highest money earned among North American jockeys. He is 2,706 for 14,979 lifetime and has earnings of over $166 million in his career to date. He led all jockeys by money earned in stakes races this week, with $221,000.
Among all jockeys in North America, Leparoux was ranked 17th by overall earnings for 2019. He was honored with the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey in 2006 and for Outstanding Jockey in 2009. Leparoux has won seven Breeders’ Cup races in his stellar career, including the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Mile with Champion Turf Mare Tepin and the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile with Classic Empire.
