After winning the Fair Grounds Oaks and then taking the Louisiana Derby, Florent Geroux was voted Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for March 16th – March 22nd. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America.
The meet’s leading rider in earnings teamed up with the meet’s leading trainer Brad Cox to win the $400,000 Twinspires.com Fair Grounds Oaks (Gr. 2). The journeymen rider allowed the three-year-old filly Bonny South to settle and come from off the pace, winning clear by two and half lengths under strong urging ($14.20) while earning 100 qualifying points towards the Kentucky Oaks. Returning in the track’s signature race, Geroux entered the starting gate of the $1,000,000 Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby (Gr. 2) aboard another Brad Cox trainee, Wells Bayou. The Frenchman sent the Kentucky Bred to the front, controlling the pace and making every pole a winning one. In holding off his foes by a length and a half ($8.40) the colt earned 100 points towards qualifying for the Run for the Roses.
Geroux was the leading North American rider in total Stakes victories, including the $75,000 Crescent City Derby for accredited Louisiana Breds aboard Sydster ($5.00) for conditioner Edward Johnston. He finished the week with 9 wins and was in the money on 60% of his 29 mounts.
The journeyman has won 43 of his 217 mounts to start the year and is 1,566 for 9,498 lifetime. In 2020, Geroux’s mounts have earned $3,469,119 and his lifetime earnings to date exceed $96 million.
