Winning three graded stakes, jockey Tyler Gaffalione was voted Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for July 6th-July 12th. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America.
Churchill Down’s Spring Meet leading rider, Tyler Gaffalione added another leading rider title at the end of Keeneland’s historic 5-day summer meet with victories in three graded stakes; the $300,000 Maker’s Mark Mile (G1), the $150,000 Shakertown Stakes (G2), and the $175,000 TVG Elkhorn Stakes (G2).
Acquainted once again with the 2019 Preakness winner War of Will in Friday’s Maker’s Mark Mile Stakes, Gaffalione rode the War Front colt to their first victory since capturing the second Jewel of the Triple Crown last year. Stalking the pace under confident handling, the journeyman rider had the son of War Front finish with an impressive late kick to just be up at the wire for conditioner Mark Casse ($13.80).
Returning Saturday, having the call on the George Arnold trained Leinster in the 5 ½-furlong Shakertown Stakes, the veteran rider had the five-year-old bay horse stalking the pace early before rallying in the stretch and making a late bid to get up in the final stages, returning ($22.40).
To complete the closing weekend of the Summer meet on Sunday, Gaffalione had the mount aboard Zulu Alpha in the 1 ½-mile TVG Elkhorn Stakes. Commencing a sustained rally through the stretch, the seven-year-old Street Cry gelding managed to get up inside the final sixteenth, securing the victory for trainer Michael Maker ($4.00).
As the leading rider by total Stakes Wins (3), Gaffalione led the Nation in total earnings, picking up $673,338. Maintaining a 22% win rate and finishing in the money on 50% of his 32 mounts.
He’s won 131 of 712 starts this year and 1,316 of 7,789 career mounts. In 2020, his mounts have earned $6,664,678 and his lifetime earnings exceed $58 million.
