A Santa Anita stakes double helped propel Geovanni Franco to the top of the ballot and be voted Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Week for May 29 – June 3, 2018. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by FoundationDetox.com, America’s #1 Equine Toxin Remover.
Franco won both stakes he was entered in on Sunday at Santa Anita. First, he closed aboard Causeforcommotion ($12.60) to win by a length in the $106,635 Possibly Perfect Stakes. He returned later on the card to win the $200,000 Melair Stakes with Loving Lynda ($15.00), defeating post-time favorite Spiced Perfection by a half-length.
With his stakes wins, Franco was the fifth leading North American rider by both stakes and total earnings for the week, with $170,960 in stakes and $266,445 in total earnings. In his 14 starts, he won four races, finished second three times, and finished third once, for a 29% win rate and landing in the money on 57% of his mounts, all at Santa Anita.
In 2018, he has won 49 of 302 starts and earned $2,251,519; he is 706 for 3,747 lifetime with over $13 million earned. In March, he notched his first Grade 1 victory aboard Fault in the Santa Margarita.
Franco has quickly moved up the ranks in Southern California. He is in second place by wins in the current Santa Anita meet, fourth by earnings, and has more mounts than any other jockey in this spring meet.
Franco, a native of Mexico City, began riding in Mexico and moved to Canada for a two-year apprenticeship. He arrived in the United States in 2011 and soon settled into a year-round riding circuit between Canterbury Park and Turf Paradise before relocating to Santa Anita.
