Jockey Glen Murphy is expected to be sidelined for about eight weeks after breaking his pelvis in two places during a schooling race at Sunland Park in New Mexico on Feb. 22. He was released from Las Palmas Hospital in El Paso, Texas, on Thursday, and will spend his downtime in Oklahoma City, said Kathy Murphy, the rider’s sister and agent.
Glen Murphy, 47, was thrown when his mount in the schooling race fractured a hind leg. He also broke a rib in the accident and had a punctured lung that quickly healed, said Kathy Murphy.
“They say in eight weeks he could get back on a horse,” Kathy Murphy said.
She said the pelvis breaks were clean breaks on each side. Glen Murphy was traveling back to his home in Oklahoma City on Saturday.
“He will be back as soon as he can,” Kathy Murphy said. “He’s very upbeat.”
Kathy Murphy looks for her brother to return riding at Ruidoso Downs, which opens in May.
