With more graded stakes wins than any other jockey last week, Joel Rosario was voted Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for September 30 – October 6, 2019. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by FoundationDetox.com, America’s #1 Equine Toxin Remover.
On a weekend that featured over 20 graded stakes, multiple Breeders’ Cup challenge races, and opening weekend of the Keeneland fall meet, many jockeys had impressive performances. Three jockeys – Joel Rosario, Jose Ortiz and Drayden Van Dyke – won three stakes over the weekend, but only Joel Rosario won three graded stakes.
Rosario won two stakes on the Saturday card at Keeneland, beginning with the $200,000 Woodford Stakes (G2) with Stubbins ($17.20) in a closing upset win. He returned two races later to take the $400,000 First Lady Stakes (G1) with Uni ($8.00). The pair moved from the back of the pack to take the lead in the stretch and win by over two lengths in the turf mile.
On Sunday, Rosario returned to Belmont and earned his third graded stake of the weekend, the $400,000 Frizette (G1) with Wicked Whisper ($7.90), this time in a gate-to-wire romp as the second choice in a field of 2-year-old fillies on the dirt.
Rosario was also second in the Flower Bowl (G1) on Sunday at Belmont and in the Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix (G2) at Keeneland on Friday. He placed third in the Darley Alcibiades (G1), Thoroughbred Club of America (G2), and Futurity Stakes (G3).
The stakes wins and placings vaulted him to the top of the earnings leaderboard, with $838,000 in stakes earnings and $1,065,198 in total earnings, more than any other North American jockey for the week.
Rosario ended the week with seven wins, six second-place finishes, and six third-place finishes in 33 starts, giving him a win rate of 21% and an in-the-money rate of 58%. He has won 176 mounts in 2019 out of 882 starts, with $18,115,586 in earnings this year. His career earnings total $206 million and he has 2,784 wins in 15,258 career starts.
