With wins in the Gamely and Summertime Oaks last weekend, Flavien Prat was chosen as Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for May 20-27, 2019. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by FoundationDetox.com, America’s #1 Equine Toxin Remover.
Prat started in eight stakes over the holiday week and though several jockeys won multiple stakes, Prat was among the few to capture two graded stakes. He also led all North American jockeys by earnings.
On the Memorial Day card at Santa Anita on Monday, Prat won the $500,000 Gamely Stakes (G1) with Vasilika ($4.20) by a length over Rymska and Irad Ortiz, Jr. The day before, he won the $200,000 Summertime Oaks (G2) with My Majestic Rose ($13.80), defeating the heavy post-time favorite Sneaking Out and Drayden Van Dyke by a half-length.
Prat also finished second in three stakes races: the Shoemaker Mile (G1) with River Boyne, the Charlie Whittingham (G2) with United, and the Monrovia (G3) with Belvoir Bay.
He was third in the Gold Cup at Santa Anita (G1) with Lone Sailor and the Daytona (G3) with Kanthaka; his worst effort in eight graded stakes was a fifth-place finish in the Triple Bend (G2) with Majestic Eagle.
Prat was the leading rider by stakes earnings, with $676,000 earned. He also led by total earnings, with $1,002,604 in his 31 starts. With 10 victories, Prat was tied for the second leading rider by number of wins and finished in the money on 74% of his 31 starts.
In 2019, Prat has won 75 of his 308 starts, including the Kentucky Derby earlier this month with Country House, and he is 685 for 3,561 lifetime. Prat’s earnings year to date total $8,701,301 and his career earnings exceed $51 million.
Voters also expressed support for Sonny Leon, who won five races in a single card on Thursday at Belterra. Leon ended the week as the leading North American rider by wins, with 12 wins in 26 starts, finished in the money on 77% of his mounts, and earned $119,305.
Statistics used in this week’s ballot comprised races from Monday, May 20 through Monday, May 27 to account for holiday racing schedules on Memorial Day.
