After a stellar Breeders’ Cup weekend capped by a win in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), Irad Ortiz, Jr. was voted Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for October 28 – November 3, 2019. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Irad Ortiz, Jr. shined on Breeders’ Cup weekend, winning four of the 14 races from the two-day festival. He won five stakes in total last week and led all jockeys by total and stakes earnings.

On Breeders’ Cup weekend, Ortiz had a mount in 12 of the 14 Breeders’ Cup races, as well as mounts in the Damascus Stakes and the Qatar Twilight Derby (G2) on the Saturday undercard at Santa Anita. He ended the event with four wins, beginning with the first Breeders’ Cup race on Friday, the $1,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint with the post-time favorite son of American Pharoah, Four Wheel Drive ($5.00).

On Saturday, Ortiz returned to the winner’s circle three more times, first in the $1,000,000 Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) with Spun to Run ($20.20) in an upset win over favored Omaha Beach. He followed that with a win in the $4,000,000 Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) on Bricks and Mortar ($4.00), rallying to win by a head.

In the final Breeders’ Cup race, the $6,000,000 Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic, Ortiz guided Vino Rosso ($11.20) to a four-length victory over McKinzie, who in turn finished four lengths ahead of Higher Power.

In addition to the wins, he finished second in the Damascus Stakes with Roadster and was third in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) with Shekky Shabaz and in the TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) aboard Without Parole.

Despite two full days of Breeders’ Cup mounts, Ortiz traveled back to New York to ride at Aqueduct on Sunday; he won the $125,000 Zagora Stakes with Empressof the Nile ($10.20) and was third in the $150,000 Nashua Stakes (G3) with Chase Tracker.

Ortiz was the leading jockey by total earnings for week, with $7,316,845 earned. Of that amount, $7,252,539 were earned in stakes races, where he led all jockeys for the week as well. In 2019, he has earned $31,267,828 and has amassed career earnings of $175.5 million to date.

Ortiz finished in the money on 60% of his 22 mounts for the week, including six wins. He is 263 for 1,275 in 2019 with 2,357 wins in 12,642 career starts.
