Five stakes wins at two different tracks, three of which were graded, was enough to solidify Irad Ortiz, Jr. as Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for August 6-12, 2018. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by, America’s #1 Equine Toxin Remover.

Ortiz led North American jockeys by all possible measures last week: earnings, stakes earnings, number of total wins, number of stakes wins, and even the number of graded stakes wins.

Ortiz won five stakes last week at two different tracks over the course of four days. His week began with a win aboard multiple stakes winner Therapist ($2.70) in the $100,000 New York Stallion Series Stakes on Monday. The duo won by over five lengths in a near-walkover following the scratches of five of the original eight entries.

He returned on a rainy Wednesday to win the $100,000 Quick Call Stakes with World of Trouble ($5.40). Unlike Monday’s stake, Wednesday’s featured a full field of 12, yet Ortiz and his mount won as the betting favorite by nearly two lengths.

On Saturday, Ortiz shipped to Chicago for the biggest day of racing in Illinois and the featured racing event of the weekend, Arlington Million Day. Ortiz swept the late stakes double, including the feature races, the $1,000,000 Arlington Million (G1) with Robert Bruce ($7.20). He and Secret Message ($14.40) then wheeled back to win the $100,000 Pucker Up Stakes (G3). Earlier on the card he was also second in the $600,000 Beverly D Stakes (G1) with Fourstar Crook.

It was back to Saratoga on Sunday for a fifth stakes win, this time in the $200,000 Saratoga Special (G2) with Call Paul ($3.70).

Ortiz earned $979,700 in stakes last week and $1,334,686 in total earnings. He has earned $16,080,508 to date in 2018 and over $132 million in his career.

Of his 31 mounts, he won 12, more than any other North American jockey last week, at a rate of 39%. He finished in the money on 61% of his starts, including five runner-up positions.
