After becoming the first jockey of the current Saratoga meet to win five races on one card, Irad Ortiz, Jr. was voted Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for July 29 – August 4, 2019. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Irad Ortiz, Jr. kicked off the week at Saratoga with a win in the opener on the Wednesday card aboard aptly named Team Win ($9.10) in a starter allowance. He returned several races later to win the $150,000 New York Stallion Series Stakes with Kid Is Frosty ($5.20), followed by three more trips to the winner’s circle. His five wins represented five different trainers and only two of his winning mounts were post-time favorites.

Ortiz also won Sunday’s $200,000 Adirondack Stakes (G2) with Perfect Alibi ($15.40), defeating heavy favorite Frank’s Rockette. He was second in the Troy Stakes (G3) with Disco Partner, in the Lure with Sacred Life, and in the Saratoga Derby Invitational with Digital Age.

In addition to his stakes wins, Ortiz topped the standings among all North American jockeys by total earnings with $978,524 and was the fifth-leading rider by stakes earnings with $507,000. Ortiz is the leading North America jockey by earnings this year, with over $17.5 million earned in 2019.  His lifetime earnings total now exceed $161 million.

Ortiz was the second-leading North American jockey by number of wins, with 11 victories last week out of 34 starts. He had a win rate of 32% and was in the money on 59% of his mounts. In 2019, he has won 198 of his 930 starts; lifetime, he is 2,292 for 12,297.
