Javier Castellano won two stakes races and topped the earnings leaderboard on his way to being awarded Shuffle Bean Coffee Jockey of the Week for the week of November 14-20, 2016. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America.
Castellano won the Grade 3, $1,000,000 Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes aboard Gunnevera, who closed from last place to win by 5 ¾ lengths as the post-time favorite. Though the Antonio Sano trainee has made six lifetime starts, Castellano had only been aboard the Dialed In colt once before to win the Grade 2 Saratoga Special in August. Earlier on the Delta Downs card, Castellano also won the $75,000 Sam’s Town Stakes by a head with Wildcat Wish.
The Delta Jackpot is the second-richest race for Thoroughbred 2-year-olds and awards Kentucky Derby qualifying points; last year’s winner was Kentucky Derby runner-up and Preakness Stakes winner Exaggerator. With his win in the Delta Jackpot, Gunnevera earned 10 Kentucky Derby points.
Castellano was the leading rider by total and stakes earnings for the week ending November 20th, with earnings totaling over $850,000. He finished in the money on 55% of his mounts and won seven races, for a win rate of 35%. The three-time Eclipse Award winner currently leads the North American jockey colony in earnings in 2016, having earned $25.4 million in 1,323 starts.
