Javier Castellano, currently North America’s leading jockey in purse earnings, continued his torrid pace with 12 wins last week at Saratoga and was chosen  the Jockey of the Week. The title goes to the week’s outstanding jockey in the opinion of a panel of industry experts. They looked at races run from August 4-10.

“It was a great week and I was fortunate enough to ride a lot of good horses,” Castellano said.

On Thursday, Castellano took up a stalking position on Micromanage in Saratoga’s $100,000 Birdstone Stakes, before pulling away to an 8-length win.

“I had to ride a little bit to go for the front-runner,” Castellano said. “He did a magnificent run when I asked him. I give him all the credit because you don’t see those kinds of races (1 3/4-mile), and he got it done.”

On Sunday, I Spent It gave Castellano his second Saratoga Special win. I spent it squeezed through a tight hole on the rail to take a 2 3/4 length win.

“The way he did it is phenomenal,” Castellano said. “I think he’s the real deal. That’s a horse we’re going to hear about in the future. It was just a tiny hole, and he went through. Not too many horses do that.

“I’m very impressed with I Spent It.  He has a lot of potential and a beautiful stride,” he added, leaving the door open for the horse to join the Derby trail next spring. “He’s by Super Saver who won the Kentucky Derby and he’s got the stride to go along with that pedigree.  He’ll appreciate more distance.”

Castellano’s mounts won 12 races during the week for earnings of $886,839. His average $2 win mutuel for the week was $6.16. spotlights the riders across North America and around the world who may be the bravest, toughest and most accomplished of all athletes. The Jockey of the Week is selected by a vote of representatives of America’s Best Racing, the Daily Racing Form, Equibase, the Jockeys’ Guild, the Paulick Report, the Thoroughbred Daily News, National Thoroughbred Racing Association, National Turf Writers and Broadcasters, Thoroughbred Racing Associations, and Turf Publicists of America.
