With back to back Stakes wins, Joseph Talamo was voted Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for March 2nd – March 8th. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. After moving his tack from Southern California to the Midwest this winter, Talamo had his talents on full display this past weekend applying his trade at Oaklawn Park. The native of New Orleans, Louisiana was aboard Whitmore while taking the $150,000 Hot Springs Stakes and returned the following race to guide Shedaresthedevil to victory in the $300,000 Honeybee Stakes (G3).
In addition, the journeymen rider maintained an impressive 37% win rate for the week, while also hitting the board on 57% of his mounts.
The charismatic journeyman kicked off his week on Thursday, winning on his first mount, Lido Legacy ($7.40) for Hall of Fame trainer, D Wayne Lukas. Continuing his winning ways on Friday, the rider took the fourth aboard Full of Grace ($3.80) for McLean Robertson and then piloted the maiden filly, Subiaco ($12.40) to win the ninth for Ron Moquett.
With 22,000 fans attending Saturday’s quality program, the veteran rider had a leg up on seven mounts. Leading up to the two feature races, Talamo tasted victory in the sixth, graduating the filly, My Golden Diablo ($5.60) for conditioner Albert Stall, Jr. In the co-feature, Talamo had the call on the Hot Springs Stakes three-time Champion, Whitmore. The favorite patiently handled, saved ground and powered to the lead in the stretch, drawing clear late to win the Hot Springs for the fourth consecutive time, returning ($3.60) for trainer Ron Moquett. In the next race, Talamo split horses and pulled away aboard Shedaresthedevil ($7.80) to win the Honeybee Stakes by three and a half lengths for conditioner Brad Cox.
Talamo finished the week with seven wins, three seconds, and one third for earnings of $412,964.
He’s won 24 of 138 starts this year and 2,026 of 13,824 career mounts. At this stage in 2020, his mounts have earned $1,504,045 and his lifetime earnings exceed $107 million.
