The only rider in North America with two graded Stakes wins, Joel Rosario was voted Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for Aug 24th-30th. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America.
Enjoying a profitable week at Saratoga Racecourse in Saratoga Springs New York, Joel Rosario topped off the weekend victorious in Saturday’s $150,000 (Gr. 2) Amsterdam Stakes and returned Sunday to capture the $125,000 (Gr. 3) Shuvee Stakes.
After breaking alertly in the Amsterdam Stakes, a six furlong sprint, Rosario vigorously sent the three-year-old, Yaupon to the lead. Setting fast fractions on the floated and muddy off track, the future Hall of Fame rider set the undefeated Uncle Mo colt down with three-sixteenths to go, drawing clear under strong handling while being geared down late for trainer Steven Asmussen returning ($4.80).
In another front-running victory on Sunday in the 1 1/8 Shuvee Stakes, Rosario guided the four-year-old Super Saver filly Letruska to the lead, opening up four lengths turning for home and holding off all challengers late for conditioner Fausto Gutierrez ($9.30).
The rider maintained a 25% win percentage and was in the money on 54% of his mounts. With seven wins, five seconds and three thirds his earnings totaled $196,360.
Rosario has won 135 of 700 starts this year with earnings of $10,665,798. He has won 2,966 of 16,180 lifetime career mounts with earnings exceeding $223 million.
