Jockey John Davila Jr. might not be the most recognized name in the game but it is one that catches the eye of horseplayers instantly when they open the Daily Racing Form on any given day at Finger Lakes Race Course. Davila’s 11 wins this week from just 16 starters caught the eye of the voting panel and he was named the Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Week for May 26th – May 31st. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America.
The 51 year old native of Puerto Rico has made the lesser known New York track, which lies halfway between Syracuse and Buffalo, his home for years now. When Davila won his milestone 3,000th victory there in November of 2011, only 47 of those wins came at other racetracks.
This week the veteran rider continued to dominate at Finger Lakes winning with 69% of his mounts. He was the leading rider there from 2001 to 2011 winning eleven consecutive titles and is once again back on top for the 2015 season with 33 wins.
For his career, Davila has 3,401 wins from 15,702 starts and earnings of $31,615,577.
