Hot riding Jose Ortiz scored 13 victories – the most in North America last week – and was named the Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Week from August 15 – 21. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America.
A 22-year-old native of Puerto Rico, Ortiz is battling with his older brother, Irad, and Javier Castellano for the leading rider title at Saratoga. Through Aug. 21, Jose has visited the Saratoga winners’ circle 37 times, good for second place in the standings. In the national standings, Jose is in second place with 232 victories through Aug. 21. He is just four wins behind Antonio Gallardo.
Competing against one of the top riding colonies in the world, the younger Ortiz went about his business scoring at a 28% win rate. Ortiz won two stakes races, the Troy Stakes aboard Disco Partner and the Union Avenue about Hot City Girl.
