With more total earnings than any other North American jockey and landing in the top three by wins, Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week title for May 21 – 28, 2018. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. While several jockeys won two stakes races last week, only Ortiz won three; two at Belmont on Memorial Day weekend and one at Monmouth on Saturday.
On Memorial Day, Ortiz brought Diversify ($6.00) home by a nose in the $200,000 Commentator Stakes at Belmont. Earlier on the card, he won the $125,000 Bouwerie Stakes with Midnight Disguise ($6.20).
On Saturday, Ortiz was at Monmouth for Monmouth Stakes Day, and won the $60,000 John J. Reilly Handicap with Brother Chub ($5.80).
He also finished third in the Monmouth Stakes (G2) with Projected, fourth in the Salvator Mile Stakes (G3) with Chip Leader, and second in the Boiling Springs Stakes with Reversethedecision.
Ortiz was the leading rider by earnings, with $622,744 earned last week. He was third by stakes earnings, picking up $284,750 in eight stakes starts. In 2018 he has earned $9,625,224 to date and his career earnings exceed $109 million.
With 10 wins, Ortiz was the third leading jockey by victories; he earned a 33% win rate and finished in the money on half of his mounts. Ortiz is 111 for 597 this year and has won 1,532 lifetime races.
Voters also recognized two jockey who shared a unique milestone: both Julio Felix and Carlos Marquez won their 3,000th career races over the weekend. Interestingly, both jockeys hit the same milestone on the same weekend, and both were at Arlington Park.
Julio Felix has now won 3,002 races in 23,406 starts with earnings of over $37 million. Marquez has 3,000 wins in 22,491 starts and has earned over $71 million to date.
Due to holiday racing schedules for Memorial Day ballot, statistics used for this week’s ballot spanned Monday, May 21 through Monday, May 28.
