After earning the riding title at Saratoga for the third time in four years, Jose Ortiz was voted Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for August 26 -September 2, 2019. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Despite a stacked ballot with multiple impressive accomplishments, Jose Ortiz stood out to voters with multiple stakes wins and his third career Saratoga riding title.

Ortiz finished the Saratoga meet with 60 wins, seven more than his brother, Irad Ortiz, Jr. Jose Ortiz won the riding title in 2016 and 2017 and finished second to his brother in 2018.

He closed out the meet with a win in the $350,000 Runhappy Hopeful Stakes (G1) on Labor Day, guiding Steven Asmussen trainee Basin ($8.20) to a six-length victory for 2-year-olds on the dirt.

He also won the $100,000 Lucky Coin Stakes with Shekky Shebaz ($7.50) on Friday for trainer Jason Servis and finished third in two graded stakes, the Prioress (G2) with Risky Mandate and the Glens Falls (G2) with Santa Monica.

Ortiz was the second leading rider by wins for the week with 11 victories, and he finished in the money on just over half of his 49 mounts. In 2019, he has won 202 of his 1,008 starts; he has 1,885 wins in 10,227 career starts.

With $371,750 in stakes earnings, Ortiz was the seventh leading rider by stakes earnings for the week, and he was the second leading rider by total earnings, having accumulated $946,335 last week to add to his yearly total of over $21 million. He was earned over $144 million in his career to date.

Though Jose Ortiz received the most votes, the divided ballot resulted in several votes each for Flavien Prat, who won three stakes and earned the Del Mar summer riding title; Paco Lopez, who won four stakes and had a five-win card at Monmouth, and Joel Rosario, who won three stakes at Saratoga.

Due to holiday racing schedules for the Labor Day weekend, statistics used for this week’s ballot included Monday, August 26 through Monday, September 2, 2019.
