With four stakes wins on a single race card, Jose Ortiz was voted Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for July 8-14, 2019.The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jose Ortiz took time out of his Saratoga schedule to ride at Delaware on Saturday for the Delaware Handicap card. He made the most out of his trip and won all four of his scheduled mounts for the day, each one in a stake.

Ortiz won the feature race on the card, the $750,000 Delaware Handicap (G2), with Elate ($2.60) in a dominant effort for trainer Bill Mott and owners and breeders Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider.

He also won his other three mounts on the card, all stakes: the $100,000 Dashing Beauty with Bronx Beauty ($4.20), the $100,000 Just a Kiss Stakes with Capla Temptress ($2.80), and the $100,000 Glasgow Stakes with Parlor ($3.60).

With four stakes wins plus four wins in overnight races, Ortiz tied for second leading rider by number of wins last week. He has won 146 of his 745 races in 2019 and has 1,829 wins in his 9,964 career starts.

Ortiz was the leading rider by both stakes and total earnings last week. His four stakes wins contributed to his stakes earnings total of $598,900, and his total earnings for the week exceeded $856,600. In 2019, Ortiz has earned $15,860,653 and has earned $139.5 million in his career to date.

Ortiz was honored with the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey in 2017, the same year that he won his first Triple Crown race, the Belmont Stakes, with Tapwrit. This year, he rode Tacitus to a second-place finish in the Belmont and third-place finish in the Kentucky Derby.
