As the top-earning North American jockey for the week, Julien Leparoux was named Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Week for the week ending November 19, 2017. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by Animal Element’s Foundation Detox and Product X Performance Enhancer.

Despite not running in a single stakes race, Julien Leparoux led all North American jockeys by total earnings last week and was voted Jockey of the Week. A quiet week for racing action, Leparoux stood out to the panel for his riding statistics and notable rides on promising 2-year-old Thoroughbreds at Churchill Downs.

Leparoux won multiple races on several of the Churchill cards last week, including three of his four mounts on Saturday and three of his five mounts on Friday, in which he was no worse than third. Several of Leparoux’s wins came aboard talented 2-year-olds, including Mississippi ($7.60) on Sunday and She’s a Gypsy ($4.60), who won impressively by over 12 lengths. Both horses were sired by Pioneerof the Nile. On Thursday, Leparoux scored with first-time starter Cicatrix ($12.20), by Violence, to win by 7 ¼ lengths.

Last week, Leparoux led all North American jockeys by total earnings, earning $306,897 in 18 starts, all at Churchill Downs, where he is currently in second place in the jockey standings for the meet. He ended the week with a 45% win rate and maintained a 67% rate in the money, with eight wins, two seconds and two third-place finishes.

He is eighth among North American jockeys by earnings this year, increasing his 2017 total to $12,976,446 in 758 starts. His career accomplishments to date include 2,464 wins in 13,363 starts and over $147 million in earnings. Leparoux has been honored as an Eclipse Award winner twice, first as an Outstanding Apprentice jockey in 2006 and again in 2009 as Outstanding Jockey. spotlights the riders across North America and around the world who may be the bravest, toughest and most accomplished of all athletes.
