Kendrick Carmouche won three stakes and topped the standings by earnings last week to be voted Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Week for January 16-21, 2018. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by Animal Element’s Foundation Detox and Product X Performance Enhancer.
Kendrick Carmouche found himself on top of the standings last week across the board: he led all North American jockeys by total earnings, led by stakes earnings, and won more stakes races than any other jockey.
All of his stakes wins came at Aqueduct, where Carmouche is currently in a four-way tie for leading jockey by wins with Manny Franco, Dylan Davis and Trevor McCarthy. Carmouche is second by earnings for the current meet.
Carmouche’s first stakes win of the week was on Thursday, January 18, in the $100,000 Bay Ridge Stakes. He and Frost Wise ($4.80), the favorite in a short field, won by a nose for trainer Michael Dilger. On Saturday, Carmouche returned to the winner’s circle with Backsideofthemoon ($7.40) for Leo O’Brien in the $100,000 Jazil Stakes. Finally, Carmouche could be found four lengths ahead of the field aboard Rudy Rodriguez-trained Control Group ($2.90) in the $98,000 Alex M. Robb Stakes on Sunday.
Only three jockeys won more than one stakes race last week; Carmouche was the only jockey to win three. He led the standings with $205,000 in stakes earnings and $342,843 in total earnings for the week. He is ranked sixth among all North American by earnings in 2018, and has earned over $94 million in his career to date.
Carmouche was the second leading jockey by wins for the week, with six victories in 27 starts. He won 22% of his mounts and finished in the money in 52% of his starts, including two seconds and six third-place finishes. He has over 3,000 wins in 18,000 lifetime starts.
In 2017, Carmouche received the Mike Venezia Memorial Award, awarded to jockeys who display extraordinary sportsmanship and citizenship.
Due to holiday racing schedules for the Martin Luther King, Jr holiday weekend, statistics used for this week’s ballot included Tuesday, January 16 through Sunday, January 21.
