Luis Contreras won two stakes last week, including one of a limited number of graded races, and was voted Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for October 7-13, 2019. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by, America’s #1 Equine Toxin Remover.

Few jockeys won more than one stakes race last weekend, and few won a Grade 1 race, but Luis Contreras managed to do both, winning the feature race of the weekend at Woodbine, the $600,000 E.P. Taylor Stakes (G1). Contreras and Starship Jubilee ($9.00) sat just off the pace early in the 1 ¼-miles turf event before pulling away on the lead to win by a length on Saturday.

Contreras’ second stakes win came on Sunday in the $100,000 Ruling Angel Stakes with Gamble’s Candy ($24.40) in an upset victory in the dirt sprint for 3-year-old fillies.

In addition to the stakes wins, Contreras was also second in the $250,000 Nearctic Stakes (G2) with Reconfigure, losing by just a head at the wire.

Contreras was the leading rider in North America by total earnings, adding $489,751 to his 2019 total of $5,221,558. His career earnings to date exceed $91 million. He was the second leading rider by stakes earnings for the week with $365,265.

With six wins, Contreras maintained a 25% win rate and finished in the money on 63% of his 24 starts. In 2019, he has won 155 of his 811 starts and is 2,159 for 12,480 lifetime.

Contreras won his first race in the United States in 2007 and his first win in Canada in 2009. He was honored with the Sovereign Award for Outstanding Jockey in 2011 and 2012. In 2018, he won his 2,000th career race on closing day of the Woodbine meet. He was the third leading jockey of the 2018 Woodbine Thoroughbred meet and is fourth place by wins in the current rider standings.
