Leading Gulfstream rider Luis Saez won six races on a single card at Gulfstream Park and was voted Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Week for the week ending December 24, 2017. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by Animal Element’s Foundation Detox and Product X Performance Enhancer.
Luis Saez started the Wednesday card at Gulfstream with mounts in eight races. He won his first three starts, with Adios Little Ed ($5.20) in the first race, Life Time Citizen ($13.20) in the third, and Classic Rock ($5.00) in the fourth. He returned to win the sixth race with Benefactor ($4.40) before winning the late double with Devilish Romance ($8.40) in the ninth and on Nonsuch ($7.60) in the final race of the day. His six wins represented six different trainers, with a combined margin of victory of over seven lengths.
In addition to his six-win card, Saez also led all North American jockeys by earnings and by total number of wins for the week, with 11 wins in 37 starts.
As the leading rider by total earnings, Saez earned $288,370 last week. He is currently the ninth leading rider by earnings for 2017, with $13,173,371 earned this year. His career earnings to date exceed $78 million.
With his 11 wins, Saez maintained a 30% win rate for the week. He also picked up five second-place finishes and six third-place finishes, finishing in the money on nearly 60% of his mounts. He is 229 for 1,406 this year and has won 1,786 of his career 10,513 starts.
Saez, the defending leading rider from the 2016-2017 Gulfstream meet, sits at the top of the leaderboard by both wins (28) and earnings ($832,838) for the 2017-2018 meet. The 25-year-old jockey won the riding title for last year’s winter Gulfstream meet with 102 wins. He has eight more wins than Tyler Gaffalione, who was the third leading rider behind Saez last winter and also won the summer riding title at Gulfstream earlier this year.
