After leading the Nation in total wins for the week and winning the Sunshine Forever Stakes, Luis Saez was voted the Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for May 4th through May 10th. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America.
Saez started the week off with a bang as he won four races from six mounts on Thursday at Gulfstream Park. The ultra-consistent jockey continued his momentum into Friday stringing together a riding triple
In Saturday’s lone stakes race on the card, the Sunshine Forever Stakes, Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher gave the journeyman rider a leg up on the Tropical Park Derby winner, Halladay. The four-year-old roan War Front colt broke awkwardly from the gate, bobbled, and recovered quickly to establish the lead. The duo made every pole a winning one and finished strong to win convincingly under good handling, returning $4.60 to his backers.
Luis Saez finished the week maintaining a 30% win percentage and was in the money on 45% of his mounts. With ten wins, two seconds, and three thirds, he led the Nation in total earnings with $214,330.
Saez has won 126 of 626 starts this year with earnings of $4,583,766. He has won 2,438 of 14,075 lifetime career mounts with earnings exceeding $118,000,000.
