Leading North America in total wins and stakes victories for the week, Trevor McCarthy was voted the Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for June 29th-July 5th. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America.
Trevor McCarthy, a leading rider in the Mid-Atlantic region was in fine form over the 4th of July weekend, capturing the Oceanport Centennial Stakes (Black Type), the Christiana Stakes (Black Type), the Kent Stakes (G3), and the John J. Reilly Handicap (Black Type).
On Friday, McCarthy traveled to Monmouth Park where he had the mount on the seven-year-old Maryland bred gelding Laki in the five-furlong Oceanport Centennial Stakes. Breaking on the lead from the inside post, the journeyman allowed the speedster to maintain a forward position along the rail before rallying outside the leaders turning for home to win drawing clear for trainer Damon Dilodovico.
On Saturday afternoon, McCarthy was victorious in the fifth aboard Princess A’go Go before entering the starting gate in the sixth race of the holiday card, the Christiana Stakes. Breaking alertly and controlling the pace in the mile and one sixteenth turf stakes, the three-year-old Temple City filly, Trickle In responded well when set down to a drive and maintained the advantage to the wire for conditioner by Michael Stidham.
In the day’s finale, McCarthy climbed aboard the Christopher Clement trained Gufo in the mile and one eighth Kent Stakes. After an awkward beginning and under patient handling, the three-year-old Declaration of War colt was allowed to settle in stride before launching a sustained run through the stretch, winning under confident handling while finishing in track record time (1:46:94).
Accepting six riding assignments at Monmouth Park, the veteran rider traveled to the Jersey Shore on Sunday in pursuit of his fourth stakes victory of the holiday weekend. With a leg up on the Kelly Breen trained four-year-old colt, Royal Urn in the John J. Reilly Handicap. The Jersey bred came from off the pace in the six furlong sprint, commencing a powerful run through the stretch under strong handling to win convincingly.
McCarthy led the Nation in total wins for the week with ten, maintaining a 29% win percentage while in the money on 53% of his mounts. With ten wins, six seconds and two third place finishes, his earnings totaled $339,050 propelling the rider to the top of Delaware’s jockey standings.
McCarthy has won 68 of 357 starts this year with earnings of $2,254,910. He has won 1,496 of 8,367 lifetime career mounts with earnings exceeding $49 million.
