With ten victories in three days of race riding, Trevor McCarthy was voted Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for July 27th-Aug 2nd. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America.

Returning to Virginia for the Colonial Downs Summer Meet in New Kent County, Trevor McCarthy, the reigning 2019 Champion asserted his presence, overwhelming the competition and winning races in bunches. He was victorious in four races on opening night including the $40,000 Hansel Stakes while adding five more on Sunday’s card.

Taking the first daily double on opening night’s program, both Maiden Special Weight events, McCarthy piloted the Michael Stidham conditioned Candy Ride colt, Branco Maria to victory in the first half and completed the second half aboard the Wesley Ward trained American Pharoah colt, Amsden.

Aboard Guillaume in the Hansel Stakes, a first-time starter for Michael Stidham in the five- and one-half furlong sprint, the two-year-old son of Hard Spun was slowest to begin and allowed to settle at the rear of the field. Saving ground around the turn and coming out through the stretch, McCarthy put the colt to a stiff drive, finishing best to be up in time and returning $6.40.

Returning Sunday, McCarthy’s gift of timing and positioning led the journeyman rider to four consecutive victories. Completing the card with five wins on the day, including four of five on the turf.

McCarthy finished the week tied for most wins in North America (10) while maintaining a 43% win percentage and in the money on 74% of his mounts. With 10 wins, four seconds and three thirds, his earnings totaled $251,000.

McCarthy won 92 of 448 starts this year and 1,520 of 8,458 career mounts. In 2020, his mounts have earned $3,011,215 and his lifetime earnings exceed $50 million.
