Florent Geroux picked up multiple stakes wins and led all North American jockeys by earnings to be named Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Week for January 8-15, 2018. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by Animal Element’s Foundation Detox and Product X Performance Enhancer.
The Road to the Kentucky Derby and the Kentucky Oaks ran through New Orleans last weekend, with the Silverbulletday and Lecomte Stakes at the Fair Grounds on Saturday. Florent Geroux would end the day with a win and 10 qualifying points in one of prep races; however, it may not have been in the race fans expected.
Geroux had a mount in five stakes on Saturday, and his first win came in the $150,000 Silverbulletday Stakes, a prep race that awards Kentucky Oaks qualifying points to the top four finishers. Geroux and his longshot mount, Stronger Than Ever, faced heavy favorite and multiple graded stakes winner Wonder Gadot. The pair trailed the field early before moving to the outside and picking off foes one by one, ending in a deep closing move to catch Wonder Gadot and John Velazquez by a neck at the wire in an upset. Stronger Than Ever ($68.40) is trained by Kenny McPeek.
Geroux returned in the following race to win the $125,000 Colonel E. R. Bradley Handicap with Tower of Texas ($9.20), in a comfortable length and a half victory as the second favorite for trainer Roger Attfield.
Geroux nearly completed an all-stakes hat trick with his post-time favorite mount in the $200,000 Lecomte Stakes (G3), Principe Guilherme. The pair was bumped and pushed wide, closing against the winner, Instilled Regard ($6.60) and Javier Castellano, for second place. The Jerry Hollendorfer trainee picked up four points for his runner-up finish on the Kenctucky Derby leaderboard.
With $207,250 earned in five stakes starts last week, Geroux led all North American jockeys by stakes earnings. He was also the leading jockey by total earnings, adding $323,340 to his 2018 total. His career earnings to date exceed $60 million.
Geroux was fourth by total wins, with seven wins and a 26% win rate. He also had three second-place finishes and three third-place finishes for an in-the-money rate of 48%.
Due to holiday racing schedules for the Martin Luther King, Jr holiday weekend, statistics used for this week’s ballot included Monday, January 8 through Monday, January 15.
