With more stakes wins than any other North American jockey, Orlando Mojica was voted Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for August 5-11, 2019. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by FoundationDetox.com, America’s #1 Equine Toxin Remover.
Orlando Mojica won four stakes at two tracks, including three stakes on a single card at Canterbury Park on Saturday night.
The three stakes wins came on Canterbury’s Made in Minnesota Day featuring a full card of state-bred restricted races and four Thoroughbred stakes.
Mojica won four races in total on the card, all for trainer Mac Robertson. He began a three-race win streak in a maiden special weight with Happy Hour Cowboy ($2.00) followed by the $50,000 Princess Elaine Stakes with Honey’s Sox Appeal ($7.00) and the $50,000 Blairs’ Cove Stakes with Hot Shot Kid ($3.00).
The third stakes win came in the feature race of the card, the $100,000 Minnesota Derby (black-type) with Mister Banjoman ($4.80), defeating post-time favorite Dame Plata and Francisco Arrieta.
Mojica started off the week with a Monday win at Assiniboia Downs in the $75,000 Manitoba Derby, in which he rode Oil Money ($3.00) to a 4-length victory for trainer Robertino Diodoro.
With 10 wins in 21 starts, Mojica was the third leading rider by wins for the week and finished in the money on 67% of his mounts. In 2019, he has won 82 of his 384 starts and has 2,384 wins in 16,849 career races.
Mojica finished among the top ten riders in the country by stakes earnings, with $154,760 in his four stakes wins. He added $266,735 last week to his 2019 total of $2.5 million and his career earnings to date exceed $41.6 million.
Mojica is currently in second place in the rider standings by wins at Canterbury, just two victories behind Francisco Arrieta and four ahead of Ry Eikleberry in a contentious battle for the 2019 riding title.
Earlier this year, Mojica won the Grade 3 Honeybee Stakes at Oaklawn with Chocolate Kisses for trainer Mark Casse.
