With four stakes wins at Monmouth on Saturday, Jose Ortiz took top honors as the Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Week for July 23 – 29, 2018. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Ortiz started in 12 stakes last week, more than any other North American jockey. He won four, also more than his colleagues, and all wins came on the Sunday card at Monmouth Park.
At Monmouth, Ortiz was slated to ride in six stakes. He began with a fifth-place finish in the Oceanport Stakes (G3) with Kharafa but returned to back to back wins in the Monmouth Cup (G3) with Name Changer ($10.40) and the WinStar Matchmaker (G3) with Elysea’s World ($10.80).
After a fourth-place finish on Unchained Melody in the Molly Pitcher (G3), Ortiz was back in the winner’s circle for the Wolf Hill aboard Imprimis ($4.60) and the feature race of the card, the Grade 1 $1,010,000 betfair.com Haskell Invitational.
The post-time favorite in the Haskell was Ortiz’ mount, 2017 Champion 2-Year-Old Good Magic. The pair sat a few lengths behind the pacesetting longshotRoaming Union before taking over the lead in the final turn and winning by a comfortable four-length margin over Bravazo and Luis Saez.
Ortiz led all North American jockeys by both total and stakes earnings. In stakes races last week, earned $1,005,000; in all races, he earned $1,158,184. He has earned $14,925,764 to date in 2018 and his lifetime earnings exceed $114 million.
With five wins in 36 starts and 11 finishes in second or third place, Ortiz maintained a 14% win rate and a 50% rate in the money. He has visited the winner’s circle 154 times in 2018 and was 1,575 career victories in 8,561 starts.
