With a perfectly timed ride aboard Girvin in the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational, Robby Albarado earned the title of Jockey of the Week for July 24 – July 30, 2017. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by Animal Element’s Foundation Detox and Product X Performance Enhancer.

Robby Albarado did not need many starts last week to be named Jockey of the Week; in fact, all it took was one well-timed ride in the $1,000,000 betfair.com Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1) at Monmouth on Sunday to win the majority vote in last week’s deep ballot.

Albarado let Girvin ($20.40) relax early in the race as they trailed the field until the final turn. Coming out of the turn four-wide, the pair hooked up with Practical Joke and dueled down the stretch to catch up with McCracken on the lead. Albarado and Girvin were up just in time, narrowly defeating McCraken by a nose with Practical Joke a half-length behind.

In just five starts in the week, Albarado picked up two wins and one third-place finish, but was the leading rider by stakes earnings, with $620,000. He also ended the week as the fifth leading rider by total earnings, adding $628,085 to his career total. He rode at 60% in the money and won on 40% of his mounts. Albarado is currently ranked 23rd among all North American jockeys by earnings in 2017, with $3.98 million in 500 starts.

Albarado has amassed  earnings of $209,521,136 in his 31,971 lifetime North American starts to date. He was won 5,062 races, and earned his career 5,000th victory earlier this year at the Fair Grounds.

Girvin is trained by Joe Sharp for owner Brad Grady. The Malibu Moon colt earned qualifying Kentucky Derby points as the winner of the Risen Star (G2) and Louisiana Derby (G2) at the Fair Grounds. He finished 13th in the Derby but returned in June to run second in the Ohio Derby (G3), a nose behind Irap. This was Albarado’s first time aboard Girvin.
