After two stakes victories and a six-win day on Sunday, Flavien Prat was voted the Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for May 11th-May 17th. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America.
Opening weekend of the highly anticipated return to racing at Santa Anita Park saw the track’s 2019 leading rider begin right where he left off by dominating the Southern California riding colony. The veteran rider was victorious on Saturday in the $150,000 Echo Eddie Stakes and returned on Sunday to capture the $100,000 Grade 3 Desert Stormer Stakes while also stringing together an extraordinary six wins on the day to finish out the week.
In the first stakes race back at “The Great Race Place” since Santa Anita convened racing in March, Flavien Prat had a leg up on Big Sweep in the Echo Eddie Stakes. After breaking her maiden last out, the three-year-old Cal Bred filly by Mr. Big now faced the boys as the lone filly in the field. Breaking well, Prat allowed Big Sweep to settle off the pace and improved position going into the far turn. With only the leader left to catch, Prat set her down and was just up at the wire in a determined effort for trainer Mark Glatt, returning $4.20 to her supporters.
Prat returned victorious in Sunday’s opener, a race on the Santa Anita grass in which the rider has come to master. Coming from far back aboard Querelle in the five and one-half furlong turf sprint, Prat had the Allowance filly flying late to be up in time for conditioner Peter Miller, returning $10.00.
The jockey continued his momentum, stringing together three more consecutive victories before climbing aboard the local favorite, Bellafina in the Desert Stormer Stakes. The seasoned Quality Road filly broke with the field and was allowed to sit just off the dueling leaders before Prat angled her out, commencing a sustained run through the stretch to be clear at the wire for trainer Simon Callaghan.
Flavien Prat finished the week maintaining a 40% win percentage and was in the money on 76% of his mounts. With ten wins, two seconds, and seven thirds, he led the Nation in total wins and earnings with $438,206.
Prat has won 59 of 239 starts this year with earnings of $3,463,119. He has won 836 of 4,234 lifetime career mounts with earnings exceeding $66 million.
