With a surprise win in the first split of the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn, Jon Court was chosen as Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for March 11-17, 2019. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by FoundationDetox.com, America’s #1 Equine Toxin Remover.
In the first of two splits of the $750,000 Rebel Stakes (G2) in which Bob Baffert-trainees were anticipated to dominate, Jon Court had the mount on a slightly overlooked 3-year-old Kentucky Derby hopeful, Long Range Toddy.
Long Range Toddy was undefeated in his first four career starts, including the Remington Springboard Mile and Clever Trevor Stakes at Remington. He was second in the Smarty Jones and third in the Southwest Stakes (G3) before starting in the Rebel. The Take Charge Indy colt went off at odds of 8-1.
The pair broke well, staying close to the pace and close to post-time favorite and previously undefeated Improbable with Drayden Van Dyke aboard. Court was patient with his horse, making a wide move from off the rail to pass Improbable in the stretch, winning by a neck. Long Range Toddy ($18.80) is trained by Steve Asmussen for owner and breeder Willis Horton Racing LLC.
The win in the Rebel, his only stakes mount of the week, landed Court as the second leading jockey by stakes earnings for the week, with $450,000. He was also second by overall earnings, adding $525,553 to his career earnings of over $105 million.
Court won two races for a 15% win rate and finished in the money on 31% of his 13 starts. He has 15 wins to date in 2019 and is 4,144 for 33,870 lifetime.
The 15 wins in 2019 have all happened at Oaklawn, where Court is the fourth leading rider by wins for the current meet.
