Fresh off off another riding title at the recently concluded Hialeah Park meeting, jockey Omar Reyes added another award this week when he was named as the AQHA/Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Month for the month of February. The award is voted on by a panel of Quarter Horse racing experts for riding accomplishments and achievements for the previous month of racing.
Reyes topped all AQHA riders this month in number of wins with 23, winning at a healthy twenty-five percent clip for the month. For the second straight season, at Hialeah, Omar would finish as leading rider in wins for the meet. He topped the riding colony with 43 victories, 5 better than closest competitor Rodrigo Vallejo.
This is the second “Jockey Of The Month Award” for the relative newcomer to race riding, as he was the inaugural winner of the monthly honor back in March of 2015. The Kansas native became involved in racing when fellow jockey and friend Raul Gutierrez talked him into galloping horses. He notched his first win aboard Anns First Lady at Lone Star Park in October 2012.
He enjoyed considerable success at his first Hialeah Park meet in 2012-13, with mounts in several stakes races and trials, garnering a win in the Moonstone Stakes aboard Doyles Dashing Star. Omar would do even better the following season when he captured the leading rider honors at the 2014-15 Hialeah Park Quarter Horse season with 45 wins from his 206 mounts.
For the month Reyes had 23 wins from his 93 mounts with 12 second placings and 17 third place finishes. He was second in AQHA earnings for the month with $309,129.
