After leading North American Jockeys in victories, Ricardo Santana, Jr. was voted the Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for April 13-19th. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America.

Beginning the week at Oaklawn Park on Thursday, Ricardo Santana, Jr. won back to back races twice, totaling four races on the day and propelling him to the top of the rider standings.

In the fourth race on the card the strong and athletic rider applied finesse while positioning Tashkent off the leaders, winning the $16,000 claimer by 3 ½ lengths for trainer John Prather, Jr. returning $41.00 to his backers. In the fifth, an Allowance race going two turns, Santana put the Arkansas-bred Souixper Charger on the lead and made every pole a winning one to finish clear by three lengths for conditioner Daneil Peitz ($7.40). In the eighth race, an Allowance Optional Claimer, Santana put the filly Letruska ($8.60) on the lead and she led start to finish for trainer Fausto Gutierrez. Returning in the nightcap aboard Aggressivity, ($14.20) the journeyman rider allowed the Steven Asmussen trained gelding to settle early and finished with a burst to win going away.

On Friday, the veteran rider returned to the winner’s circle aboard Summer Revolution, the 7-year-old mare owned and trained by Asmussen ($5.00). The rider continued his winning ways into the weekend, guiding the gray Tapit gelding, Times Square ($17.80) to a come from behind victory for Federico Villafranco. Concluding the week of racing on Sunday, in the day’s eighth race, he put the 4-year-old Asmussen trainee Cherished on the lead, took command and held the favorite at bay to win by a neck ($9.40).

He finished the week with a 25% win percentage and was in the money on 54% of his mounts from seven wins, six seconds, and two thirds for earnings of $224,248.

Santana has won 59 of 306 starts this year and his mounts have earned $3,987,468. He has won 1,376 of 8,466 lifetime career mounts with earnings exceeding $74 million.
