Leading North America in stakes and total earnings, Ricardo Santana, Jr. was voted the Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for February 10th – February 17th. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Entering the weekend, the Panamanian native was three wins shy of his 500th career Oaklawn Park victory, where he’s currently on top of the standings with 17 wins.

On Friday, the young and energetic journeyman entered the winners circle for his 498th victory, an $88,000 Allowance race aboard Firecrow ($8.00) for trainer Ron Moquett.

Flying to New Orleans on Saturday, Santana guided the three-year-old Munnings Filly, Finite to her 5th consecutive victory, taking the $300,000 Grade 2 Rachel Alexandra Stakes ($7.40) by four and a half lengths for Hall of Fame trainer Steven Asmussen.

Returning Sunday to his winter base in Hot Springs, Santana was victorious in the day’s finale, winning his 500th race at Oaklawn for the Asmussen trainee, Icecap ($12.00).

Back in the saddle for the President’s Day Holiday program on Monday, Santana continued his dominance by winning the $750,000 Grade 3 Southwest Stakes aboard the promising Declaration of War colt, Silver Prospector ($11.40), earning ten eligibility points toward the 2020 Kentucky Derby.

Santana finished the week with seven wins, five seconds, and four thirds for earnings of $1,001,278.

In his short and impressive time applying his trade in the United States, Santana’s mounts have earned over $72 million with 1,344 total career wins.
