Flavien Prat Wins Ride of the Week Aboard Neveradoubt

Flavien Prat is one of the hottest jockeys at Santa Anita, and he showed every bit of his riding talent in guiding 42-1 longshot Neveradoubt to a half length victory in Saturday’s Snow Chief Stakes. In the 1 1/8 miles turf event, Prat broke from the eight post and by the first turn was on the rail. He then got Neveradoubt to settle behind horses and remained on the rail until the stretch turn. Midway on the turn, Prat took Neveradoubt off the rail and found a seam between horses about four wide at the head of the stretch. With solid...

Castellano’s Veteran Patience Earns the Jockey Draft Ride of the Week

Ironicus went from competing in allowance races to scoring an impressive victory in the Longines Dixie (Gr. 2) on Saturday’s Preakness card at Pimlico. A big part of that improvement was the all-star handling by jockey Javier Castellano, who earned the Jockey Draft Ride of the Week honors. Breaking from the inside, Castellano was content to save ground in both turns aboard Ironicus. While many of the top favorites in the Dixie were forced to go six to 10 wide on the turn entering the stretch, Ironicus was making his move on the rail. Castellano eased the four-year-old son...

Veteran Russell Baze Wins Ride of the Week

Riding with a confidence that comes with 12,543 career victories, Russell Baze piloted Central Heat to a come-from-behind win in Saturday’s $61,615 Golden Poppy Stakes at Golden Gate Fields. He may have been on the slight betting favorite, but it took a Hall of Fame ride for Central Heat to end up in the winner’s circle. Baze broke perfectly with the daughter of Unusual Heat from the six post and was able to secure solid position behind the leaders in the two to three path. Saving as much ground as possible on each turn appeared to be the strategy....

Van Dyke’s Crafty Riding Earns Ride of the Week Honors

Jockey Drayden Van Dyke continued his stakes winning ways over the Santa Anita lawn with a nose victory aboard in Queen of the Sand (IRE) in Saturday’s Santa Barbara Handicap (GIII). Van Dyke and his mount were squeezed coming out of the gate and were content to be in next to last while Fanticola carved out easy fractions on the front end. Queen of the Sand saved ground every step of the way in the 1 ¼ miles turf event. At the top of the stretch Van Dyke was able to guide his mount through a narrow hole three paths off the rail to gain clear sailing. Fanticola and jockey Joe Talamo kept the rail shut off for Three Hearts and appeared to have the race won until Queen of the Sand launched her last second heroics. When Queen of the Sand got clear and started to run down the leader, she began to drift in and, in a race winning move, Van Dyke switched to a left handed whip which kept his mount from lugging in on the leader. A ground saving ride, a gutsy move to find open ground, and a split second decision to switch sticks led to a nose victory and a well-deserved Ride of the Week award. April 11, 2015 – Keeneland – Race 10 – Coolmore Lexington Stakes (Grade III) Jockey Julien Leparoux negotiated the perfect trip for Divining Rod and went on to score a three length victory with the improving three-year-old. As the third choice in the betting, Divining Rod broke sharp but was content to sit behind favored Fame and Power who went to the early lead. Going two turns at Keeneland, it is critically important to save ground in the first turn and Leparoux was able to accomplish that while reserving his mount for later in the race. Going into the...

Junior Alvarado Earns Ride of the Week

Jockey Junior Alvarado piloted Lady Lara (IRE) to victory in Saturday’s $300,000 Honey Fox Stakes at Gulfstream Park and was awarded the JockeyTalk360 Ride of the Week. Lady Lara was bumped and pinched back within 100 yards out of the gate. Alvarado did not panic, gathered her and found the rail in the first turn. Lady Tara sat on the rail until the stretch, when the real riding began. Alvarado found a small seam in the stretch, got Lady Tara to switch leads and surged to the lead in less than a sixteenth of a mile. Lady Tara would hold on...
