After reaching a milestone victory on Sunday and celebrating his 5,000th win, Robby Albarado was named the Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Week for January 16-22, 2017. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America.
Only 33 jockeys have earned 5,000 career riding victories or more, and Robby Albarado joined this exclusive group on Sunday, January 22 at the Fair Grounds. Albarado started the day with 4,999 wins and six scheduled mounts, but escaped the pressure early by winning the first race on the card. Albarado’s 5,000th career win came aboard Vivacious V.V. ($7.60), trained by Scott Gelner and owned by Oak Tree Stables. Albarado piloted the Louisiana-bred filly from near the back of the pack to close by a neck as the third betting choice in the race.
It was a good weekend for Albarado, who also won the Grade 3, $200,000 Lecomte Stakes at the Fair Grounds on Saturday with Guest Suite ($7.60). Albarado and Guest Suite, the post-time favorite, defeated a field of 11 by over a length, collecting ten Kentucky Derby points with the win.
In his 27 starts of the week, Albarado picked up six wins, four seconds, and six thirds. He was the third leading rider by stakes earnings and led all North American jockeys by earnings for the week, adding $314,105 to his total. He rode at 59% in the money and won on 22% of his mounts.
Albarado is currently the fourth leading jockey at the Fair Grounds by number of wins and third by total earnings for the meet. He is 13th among all North American jockeys in 2017 by earnings, with $477,865 in 71 starts.
Albarado has amassed lifetime earnings of $205,995,885 in his 31,542 lifetime North American starts. Impressively, he has maintained a 45% in the money rate, finishing in the top three in over 14,000 races.
The Fair Grounds was a fitting location for Albarado’s 5,000th winning ride. The Louisiana native won his first career race at Evangeline Downs in 1990 and won his first stakes race at Louisiana Downs in 1993. His 3,000th win was also celebrated at the Fair Grounds in 2004. Win number 4,000 took place at Churchill Downs in 2009, where Albarado is the third-leading rider of all time. Albarado won his first Grade 1 race at Churchill, clinched the spring meet riding title in 2008, and has over 1,000 Churchill Downs victories.
Albarado notched his only victory in a Triple Crown race to date with Curlin in the 2007 Preakness Stakes. However, he has four second-place finishes and four third-place finishes in other Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes starts. He has two Breeders’ Cup wins as well: the Mile in 2011 and the Juvenile Fillies Turf in 2009. In addition to his many domestic graded stakes victories, Albarado also won the Woodbine Mile in 2010 and the Dubai World Cup in 2008. He was honored with the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award in 2004.
