A sweep of three stakes on closing night of the Churchill spring meet earned Robby Albarado the title of Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Week for June 26 – July 2, 2017. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by Animal Element’s Foundation Detox and Product X Performance Enhancer.
Robby Albarado entered closing day at Churchill with mounts in nine of the 11 races on the Friday evening card. By the end of the night, he would win a third of his starts, sweeping the three stakes races on the card while waiting out a severe weather delay in Louisville.
Albarado won the feature race of the night, the 116th running of the $100,000 Bashford Manor Stakes (G3), with Ten City for trainer Kenny McPeek and owner Tommie M. Lewis. Ten City ($3.00) was the post-time favorite and defeated Copper Bullet by a length and a half in the 6-furlong dirt event.
Albarado and McPeek teamed up again in the $100,000 Debutante Stakes two races later in the card to win with Sunny Skies ($4.60). The Animal Kingdom filly defeated aptly-named longshot Upset Brewing by nearly two lengths over a sloppy track for owner Normandy Farms.
Finally, Albarado and Limousine Liberal won the final stakes of the night and of this year’s Churchill Spring meet, the $70,893 Kelly’s Landing Stakes. Limousine Liberal ($4.00) sat just off the pace throughout much of the 7-furlong race before pulling ahead in the stretch to win by nearly three lengths. Limousine Liberal is trained by Ben Colebrook for owner Katherine G. Ball.
In his 29 starts of the week, Albarado picked up four wins, seven seconds, and one third-place finish. He was the fifth-leading rider by stakes earnings and ranked ninth by total earnings for the week, adding $292,053 to his total. He rode at 41% in the money and won on 14% of his mounts. Albarado is currently ranked 25th among all North America jockeys by earnings in 2017, with $3.125 million in 451 starts.
In addition to his Churchill starts and wins last week, Albarado also rode at Gulfstream on Saturday, finishing second aboard Mo Cash in the $150,000 Carry Back Stakes (G3). He then traveled back to Kentucky to ride the Sunday card at Ellis Park.
Albarado has amassed lifetime earnings of $208,668,549 in his 31,922 lifetime North American starts. He has won 5,058 races, and earned his career 5,000th victory and subsequent Jockey of the Week honors at the Fair Grounds in January 2017. Win number 4,000 took place at Churchill Downs in 2009, where Albarado is the third-leading rider in track history. Churchill has been the home over 1,000 victories for Albarado, including his first career Grade 1 race.
